1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5

This one comes with the rare Manual Transmission!

The year 1970 was the first of the two model years for the 3.5 coupe and this one was #21 off of the production line. The car was first purchased by the Italian Consulate located in San Francisco, which may explain why it is a European version, and has a manual transmission. It is said that there were only 122 of these cars built with a manual transmission (but I haven't found someone to document that), and I believe has more power than the North American version. Get it up to 4,500+ RPM in second and third gear and you will be amazed. Because of the V-8 torque you can also drive in town and hardly have to shift. You can go from 15 to 80 MPH in third gear if you want to.

The prior owner spent over $10,000 with Hatch & Sons proactively addressing some issues that many today would just gloss over. Consequently the suspension and handling really reflect that investment by how well the car rides and handles. Most recently, the car has received new paint in the original Silver Grey (180G), as well as show quality chrome plating in excess of $18,000 that brings a brilliant look to the car. It comes with OEM Bundt wheels that finish the look (or we can switch them out for hubcaps).

In respect to the interior, the car received newly veneered wood from Madera Concepts, a fresh restoration of the Becker radio by Becker AutoSound, as well as new carpet and blue leather. The detailing of the engine is quite stunning, although not over-restored, with every effort to bring it back to the way it was when it left the factory.

It's a car that is as wonderful to drive as it is to look at, and would be a great addition to anyone's collection. And since it's a Mercedes-Benz, the reliability makes it a great choice if you want a collection of just one!
